RAISING THE BAR

Southend High School for Girls has a creative and dynamic curriculum in which girls are encouraged to become intellectually curious, independent learners .

From year 7 through to Key Stage 5 we encourage pace and challenge across the curriculum.  We are not bound by traditional age based activities but aim to deliver a curriculum suited to the abilities and needs of our students. Therefore we fast track all year 7 and 8 to sit their SATS at the end of year 8.  Likewise we have an early entry at GCSE for English Language. There are some girls in year 9 and 10 taking extra Maths at AS level and a group of year 9's studying geology GCSE in their spare time.  Throughout the school Gifted and Talented programmes and activities present challenges to our most able, whilst our monitoring and mentoring programme supports those who find any aspect of the work difficult.

To develop creativity and Independence we have timetabled Flexible Fridays to happen once per fortnight for year 7.  During these days Faculties run projects, often outside school, to build up team work and self supported study.  These days have been introduced into years 8 and 9 again off timetable and project based.

As a Language College we clearly see the value of learning another language and all our girls take French and either Spanish or German up to year10 when they take one or two for GCSE.  There is also the option of taking other languages from the language college programme. Health and fitness is also an important aspect of the school and at key stage 3 all girls undertake 2 hours of PE per week.

Our pupils sit 10 or 11 GCSE subjects plus half course RS.  They also have at least 1 hour of PE per week.

In the sixth form most students begin on 4 A levels, although a few may take 5.  Everyone also takes General Studies and there are options to take extra classes leading to AS in a number of extra subjects taught in twilight (after school) sessions.
