ABOUT SOUTHEND HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
Southend High School for Girls began life as a co-ed school in 1895 with 20 girls and 5 boys on roll. However in 1912 the two sexes split and the girls school was established in its own right.
By 1957 the school had moved to its present site in the leafy suburbs of Southend. In contrast to the 1895 numbers we now have 1030 on roll with a handful of boys in the sixth form.
As a selective school our main focus is upon academic achievement with over 95% of our students leaving us to take up university places.
Our teaching is dynamic and active and we seek to produce intellectually curious, independent learners. We are however, much broader in our outlook, having excellent arts and physical education reputations (we are the top athletics team in the country for both juniors and intermediates (2008 and 2009) and came third at the World Schools Athletics competition in June 2009).
Whilst as a Language College and an International Award School we are developing the global curriculum in school and in Southend. SHSG is also a RAPP accredited consultant school helping and supporting other schools throughout the country.
The words may be old fashioned but the sentiment of the stained glass window which graces our entrance lobby remains true for us:
SO ENTER THAT DAILY THOU MAYEST BECOME MORE LEARNED AND THOUGHTFUL, SO DEPART THAT THOU MAYEST BECOME MORE USEFUL TO THY COUNTRY AND TO MANKIND.
